What’s the difference between the US Patent and Trademark website and the Google Patent website?

In terms of searching for patents, both websites have lists of current issued patents and public patent applications.

The USPTO website is the government’s website and anyone can search through public PAIR (Patent Application Information Retrieval) to find an issues patent or published patent application. Like most government websites, it is not particularly user-friendly, but if you know what you are looking for you can find what you need.

Google made a patent searching database called Google Patents. It is more user-friendly, but not as up-to-date as the USPTO website because Google has to retrieve the information from the USPTO website. Recently-published applications and issued patents might not appear on Google Patents right away.

Another website to use to search for patents is, which allows users to download PDFs of U.S. patents if you know the patent number.
